Today Turkey celebrates the Atatürk Memorial Day, Sports and Youth Day. Sports events and concerts are held across the country on May 19 each year. After the declaration of the Independent Turkish Republic in 1923, Ataturk himself proposed to celebrate this day as a youth day. In 1981 this day was renamed Atatürk Memorial Day, Youth and Sports day.
